Tractor Goes Through Ice – Name Of Deceased Released

(POWASSAN, ON) – On January 25, 2017 at 3:33 p.m., members of the North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the North Bay Regional Health Centre Emergency Medical Services (EMS) received a call for service at the Hydro Pond in Powassan. Initial reports indicated that a tractor being operated on the ice – broke through – and became submerged with the operator still inside.

Family members of the operator soon arrived on scene and with the assistance of OPP and EMS began performing life-saving measures. The male was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

He is identified as Eugene KUNKEL, 82 years of age from Powassan, Ontario.
