(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Sunday, December 15 2013 at approximately 3:10 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 11/17 near Finmark Road.
The driver of a Ford truck was east bound on Highway 11/17 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, entered the east bound ditch and rolled over. A large fuel tank in the bed of the truck moved forward through the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
The 27 year old male driver from Keswick, Ont was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
The male passenger, John LACKEY, 55 years of age, from Keswick, Ont was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Highway 11/17 was closed for approximately nine hours while officers investigated.
Also on Sunday, at approximately 2:50 pm, officers responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 61, south of Mount Forest Boulevard.
The driver of a south bound Nissan truck lost control of the vehicle, crossed over into the north bound lane and collided with a north bound GMC Yukon.
Four people were transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
The male driver of the Nissan truck was charged with Unsafe Lane Change contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
Over the weekend, officers responded to 46 motor vehicle collisions. Most of the collisions involved vehicles going into the ditch due to icy road conditions.
On Monday, December 16, from 7:00 am to present, officers responded to 7 motor vehicle collisions, with most of the vehicles going into the ditch. There were no injuries reported.
OPP want to remind motorists to slow down.
