(THUNDER BAY, ON) Officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were very busy over the Easter long weekend responding to a number of motor vehicle collisions.
From Thursday, April 17 to Monday, April 21 officers responded to 23 motor vehicle collisions. With the poor weather conditions on April 17 and April 19, officers responded to a number of vehicles that went into the ditch as well as collisions that occurred within the Thunder Bay area.
On Saturday, April 19, a Highway Safety Division officer responded to a collision that occurred on Highway 11/17 in the Municipality of Shuniah. The driver of a Ford Focus, with a homemade trailer attached, was east bound on Highway 11/17 when he lost control of the vehicle, went into the ditch, flipping the trailer loaded with plywood. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle did not sustain any damage but the trailer was damaged.
Also on Saturday, officers responded to a tractor trailer collision on Highway 102 near the Kaministiquia River Bridge. The driver of the tractor trailer lost control of the vehicle, collided with several guide rails and jackknifed across Highway 102. The driver (lone occupant) was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
Highway 11/17 was closed at the Highway 102 junction for several hours due to this collision on Highway 102 as well as due to a number of transport trailers that became stuck on Highway 11/17 and Highway 102.
