(BIG TROUT LAKE, ON) – During the early morning of Friday April 24, 2015 officers responded to a residence in the community of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big Trout Lake) First Nation after receiving a report of a 16 year old youth in need of medical assistance. The youth was subsequently flown out of the community to Thunder Bay for further medical treatment.
On April 25, 2015 three people from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation were arrested. All three accused, age 19, 18, and 17 were charged with Aggravated Assault contrary to the Criminal Code.
On May 11, 2015 the 16 year old youth identified as Joshua NANOKEESIC from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation died in hospital in Sioux Lookout. A post mortem examination was conducted in Toronto on May 14, 2015.
On May 19, 2015 the three accused were arrested and additionally charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code. The accused are Loyal McKAY (19) and Joshua Darion Storm NANOKEESIC (18), both of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation. The third male (17) from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The circumstances surrounding the death continue to be investigated by the OPP North West Region Forensic Identification Unit and OPP Crime Unit personnel under the direction of Detective Inspector Peter Loree of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).
