(BRACEBRIDGE, ON) – After recent reports of a fraudulent telephone call to a local resident the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Bracebridge detachment is reminding the public to take steps in protecting themselves against scams.
On January 24, 2014 at approximately 6:00 pm a Bracebridge resident reported that he had recently received a telephone call from an unknown male stating the Bracebridge resident had won a trip. The unknown male then insisted on having the credit card number of the Bracebridge resident. The information was never given to unknown male and he hung up the telephone when asked what company he worked for.
Always remember, if an offer sounds suspicious or seems ‘too good to be true’, it probably is. If you’re in doubt, it’s wise to ask the advice of a close friend or relative, or even your banker. Rely on people you can trust.
It’s not always easy to spot scams, and new ones are invented every day.
If you suspect that you may be a target of fraud, or if you have already sent funds, don’t be embarrassed – you’re not alone.
If you want to report a fraud, see examples of various fraud scams, or if you need more information, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
