Taxi Driver & Passengers Charged At RIDE

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) – Members of the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted numerous Reduce Impaired Drivers Everywhere (RIDE) programs this past weekend. Although no drivers of vehicles stopped were found to be impaired by alcohol, a number of other alcohol related offences were discovered.

At one of the RIDE programs on Saturday August 20th around 9:30 p.m., officers stopped a Taxi cab (minivan) on Line 32 at the intersection of Road 150 (between Sebringville and Mitchell). The taxi driver had seven adult passengers (fares) in the cab. The passengers were in possession of, and consuming liquor.

The seven passengers, six of which were Municipality of West Perth residents and one a Township of Perth East resident, received a ticket for the following Liquor License Act (LLA) offence, “Consuming liquor in other than licenced premises, residence or private place”.

The driver a Municipality of West Perth resident was issued an LLA ticket for “driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available”.

A check on the taxi cab licence plates indicated that they were not registered to the vehicle. The driver was warned for this offence while the cab owner was issued a summons for “permit use of plate not authorized for the vehicle”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The cab was towed from the scene, while the driver and passengers found alternate means to reach their destination.
