Swimmer Rescued After Search

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Norfolk County Marine Unit along with the Canadian Coast Guard responded to the area of Lake Erie, Turkey Point, Ontario.

On Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Norfolk County OPP received a complaint of a missing female in Lake Erie near Turkey Point.

Through the course of investigation it was determined that two (2) 20 year old females from Brantford, Ontario attended Turkey Point and rented a personal water craft (PWC). Both then made their way towards Long Point Bay when the passenger asked to be let off in order to swim in the water.

The operator of the water craft returned after several minutes however the passenger could not be located. After several hours of searching, the operator returned to shore and contacted the OPP and Canada Coast Guard.

A search of the waters in Long Point Bay near Turkey Point was initiated by the OPP and the Canadian Coast Guard from Port Dover and Long Point.

The missing female was subsequently located approximately one mile off shore by a passing vessel. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

“The OPP would like to remind the public of the inherent dangers of leaving someone in the water far from safety. Despite having worn a personal flotation device, the person in the water could of easily have suffered the effects of hypothermia and shock as well as the potential of having been struck by a passing vessel”, comments Sergeant Jim Millson, Norfolk County OPP Marine Co-ordinator.

No charges have been laid in this investigation.
