(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – On Friday October 10, 2014 Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of a possible impaired driver entering Northumberland County on Highway 401.
Witnesses reported a car weaving between the lanes with speeds ranging from 80-120 km/h at about 7pm. Officers located the car near County Road 45 (Cobourg area) and attempted to stop it. The driver immediately accelerated at which point a suspect apprehension pursuit was initiated.
Another OPP officer assisted and a ‘rolling block’ was set up. At this point the driver of the car braked heavily in the centre lane coming to a complete stop on the highway. This action resulted in a collision between the suspect vehicle and a OPP cruiser.
Traffic in the westbound lanes eventually slowed to a stop to allow police a ‘safety zone’ with which to deal with the driver. No one was injured as a result of the collision.
The officers arrested the female for Flight from Police and determined that she was not impaired. The reasons for her erratic driving remain unclear however police discovered that she was visiting from China and possessed no licence to drive a vehicle in Canada.
Yaping HUA age 55 of China faces charges of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from Police, both Criminal Code offences. She was held for a bail hearing on October 11, 2014 via video.
A/Inspector Rob Kobayashi of Northumberland OPP “The actions of this driver put members of the public at risk, as well as the officers and the driver herself. Highway 401 is busy at any time of the year especially the Thanksgiving weekend. We are fortunate no one was injured as a result of this erratic and negligent driving.â€Â
