Stay Safe While Cycling This Spring

Cycling can be enjoyed safely when you understand the rules of the road and practice proper safety.

The Chatham-Kent police would like to remind cyclists that as per the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) a bicycle is a vehicle that belongs on the road. Riding on the road means riding with other traffic. This is only safe when all traffic, including motorists, obey the rules of the road.

Sidewalks are designed for pedestrian traffic (and young riders). The roads and bicycle lanes in our community are the designated places for cyclists to ride. Please wear proper safety equipment, as well as bright reflective clothing to help assist you in being seen and staying safe.

Drivers need to be aware of other vehicles using the roadway. Please be patient and ‘Share the Road’ with all lawful road users. Some cyclists do not move as fast as cars and we need to be safe around them to ensure we all arrive safely. You may have to slow down and wait for an appropriate opening to make a safe pass. Please be considerate and safe in all your travels.

Same Roads, Same Rules, Same Rights.
