Spike Belt Deployed To Stop Speeder

(MATTAWA, ON) – On March 3, 2016, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a member from the Mattawa Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on general patrol on Highway 17, Papineau-Cameron Township, and attempted to stop a westbound vehicle for the traffic offence of speeding.

The driver failed to stop for police, so a suspect apprehension pursuit began which was discontinued after a short distance. The suspect vehicle was later safely stopped after a spike belt was deployed and then the male driver was arrested.

Through further investigation, it was learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen on March 2, 2016.

Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, section 249.1(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)

Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, section 249(1)(a) CC

Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000, section 354(1)(a) CC

Fail to Comply with Recognizance, section 145(3) CC

Speeding , section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)

The accused was held for bail and is to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on March 4, 2016.
