Speeding Vehicle Stopped With Unbelted Children in Back

(Chatham-Kent, ON) On the 19th of September, 2013 at 12 noon the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a vehicle on the 401 Highway for speeding, near Victoria Road.

Police radar clocked the vehicle at 136 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone. Further police investigation determined that a 5 year old boy and a 7 year old girl were not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat.

The driver, a 40 year old, Kanata, Ontario woman has been charged with speeding; 136km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone and Fail to Ensure Child Properly Secured under the Highway Traffic Act.

The OPP would like to remind motorists that a properly worn seat belt greatly increases your chances of surviving a motor vehicle collision. Remember, no doubling up; only one person to a seat belt. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that passengers under 16 years of age are using the seat belt or an appropriate child car seat.
