(KIRKLAND LAKE, ON.) – Members of the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a local man with several criminal offences. The charges stem from the theft and subsequent recovery of a snowmobile stolen from a Fifth Street residence in Kirkland Lake. The machine a 1999 Yamaha SRX was stolen sometime between December 27 and 28, 2013.
Charged is Brendan LEGACY age 20 of Timmins, Ontario with Theft Under $5,000 of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 and two counts of Fail to Comply with a Probation Order.
Police remind sled owners that part of snowmobile operation should include security. Every effort should be taken by owners to secure their snowmobile when not in use: never leave the key in the ignition or the machine running when unattended, when parked ensure there is lighting around the sled, lock it with throttle locks, track locks, tether it to another machine, hardened chains and bolts are all options, if a garage is available lock the machine in it, if left on a trailer ensure the trailer is also secure from theft.
“Many snowmobiles are taken for parts. There are few identifiable numbers on many machines. Snowmobile owners can protect themselves by engraving their property and buying machines or parts with serial numbers. For serial numbers to be effective the owner must keep a list. The best offence against theft is a good defence,†states Staff/Sgt Rick Witty Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police Detachment Commander.
By implementing some of these crime prevention strategies snowmobile owners can reduce the possibility of being victimized.
