(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On January 28, 2017, at 10:24 p.m., members of the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a residence on Pickerel River Road on the Henvey Inlet First Nation. Initial reports were that a dispute erupted and that gunshots were fired.
Investigation has thus far revealed that several persons attended the residence. At some point during their visit a male discharged a firearm. Persons present fled the area and called police. Upon police arrival, the male was situated inside the residence and still armed.
Members of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), as well as the OPP Crisis Negotiator Team were deployed to the scene in an effort to bring the event to a safe conclusion. At 7:36 a.m., on January 29, the male surrendered to police.
As a result of the investigation;
Percy ASHAWASAGAI, 48 years old from Henvey Inlet First Nation, was charged with;
Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition contrary to section 86(1) of the CC
Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited device or Ammunition contrary to section 86(1) of the CC
Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC
Pointing a Firearm, contrary to section 87 of the CC
The accused was held pending a bail hearing.
