(CHATSWORTH, ON) – High winds, blowing snow and pockets of zero visibility caused hazardous driving conditions resulting in some road closures on Friday, January 9, 2015; namely Hwy. 26 from Owen Sound to Meaford; Hwy. 6 & 10 from Owen Sound to Markdale and Hwy. 21 from Springmount to Alvanley.
Between 8:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9th and 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10th, Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 35 motor vehicle collisions. The vast majority of the calls were car-ditch related.
At approximately 8:46 a.m. on Friday, January 9th, a vehicle had rear-ended a snow plough on Hwy. 26 in the Municipality of Meaford. A second collision involving three vehicles occurred a few minutes later in the same vicinity (Billy Bishop Airport). Injuries, if any, were minor in nature.
At approximately 11:38 a.m. on Friday, January 9th, OPP investigated a fatal motor vehicle collision on Hwy.10, south of Flesherton, in the Municipality of Grey Highlands, resulting in the death of a 33 year old man from Dundalk.
On Saturday, January 10th at approximately 11:15 a.m., OPP investigated a 4 vehicle collision on Hwy. 21 and Concession 7 in the Township of Georgian Bluffs, where 4 people were transported to hospital with minor injuries.
Grey County OPP remind motorists to always adjust their driving to the current road and weather conditions and to leave extra space between vehicles. Stay alert, focus on the road, and avoid sudden braking, accelerating or steering.
