SERIOUS COLLISION CLOSES HIGHBURY AVENUE

(ELGIN COUNTY, ON) – Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating a serious two vehicle motor vehicle collision which earlier this morning October 17, 2013.

The collision occurred around 5:25am on Highbury Avenue between Ron McNeil Line and Mapleton Line, Central Elgin. A Honda Civic was travelling south on Highbury Avenue when the vehicle traveled over the centre line and collided head on with a north bound passenger van. The impact caused the van to roll onto its side, both vehicle sustained major damage.

The driver of the Honda Civic, a 23 year old St. Thomas man, had to be extricated from the vehicle by Central Elgin Fire. He was transported to London Health Sciences Centre and was listed in serious condition with life threatening injuries. The driver of the passenger van was transported to Elgin St. Thomas General Hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators were on scene assisting with the investigation which is ongoing.

Highbury Avenue was closed for approximately 7.5 hours and re-opened at 1:10pm.
