School Bus Engulfed In Flames After Hitting Tree – Students Treated At The Scene

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Monday June 06, 2016, shortly after 8 a.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were called to Line 41 east of Road 104, where a school bus had left the roadway struck a tree and caught fire.

Investigation revealed that a First Student school bus was driving east bound on Line 41 when it left the roadway, entered the north ditch area, struck a small tree and came to a sudden stop when it hit a larger tree. The impact resulted in the driver sustaining non-life threatening in injuries and the 6 high school students on the bus sustaining minimal to minor injuries. The driver was transported to a local hospital while the students were treated and released at the scene by Perth County paramedics.

The occupants of the bus evacuated the vehicle in an orderly fashion. Once the last person had exited the bus, it caught fire and the entire bus was engulfed in flames within a short period of time. The Township of Perth East Fire Dept. (Shakespeare Station) attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

49-year-old Kevin Henry of Stratford has been charged with “careless driving”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
