Scammer Gets $3000 In Brockton

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding area residents to verify unsolicited contacts following the report of a successful scam in the Municipality of Brockton.

The emergency scam or grandparent scam involves a panicked phone call from a “grandchild” saying they are in trouble and need money right away. Typically, the scammer will say they’ve been in a car crash and they really need your help. They count on you rushing to help your loved one without taking the time to check the validity of the call. In this case, the scam was successful and $3,000 was sent.

The South Bruce OPP is asking you to take the time to verify unsolicited contacts. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it. With this particular scam, ensure that your grandchild is involved before you ever consider sending money.

You work hard for your money, so work hard to protect it and remember; the scams will continue as long as the con artists continue to make money.

Anyone interested in more information on fraud can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.
