SAFE BOATING

(DRYDEN, ON.) – The OPP would like to remind residents and tourists that being well-informed and well-prepared out on the lake this summer is a sure way to enjoy a tragedy-free boating season. Tips for staying safe this summer on the lake include:

Wearing a lifejacket or PFD – the body’s reaction to the surprise of going overboard and the shock of cold water can affect breathing, nerves and muscle strength. Wearing a lifejacket gives you time to adjust to the emergency and allows you to assist others. Buckle up before getting on board.

Don’t cruise with booze – drinking and boating is just as dangerous as drinking and driving a motor vehicle and the penalties for impaired driving also apply to impaired boating. Fatigue, sun, wind and the motion of the boat dull your senses. Alcohol intensifies theses effects, leaving you with poor fine motor skills and impaired judgement.

Be prepared – Check the forecast for weather and water conditions before heading out and keep a watch full eye out for changing conditions. Study and carry marine charts. Inspect all you equipment before departure. Leave a trip/rescue plan with a responsible person.

Let’s all have a safe and enjoyable summer on the lakes this year.
