(Renfrew County, Ontario)- The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind motorists to follow the rules of the road when encountering intersections without functioning traffic signals. It is important that everyone uses caution in order to maintain a safe traffic flow on all roadways.
In the event of traffic signals being completely out at an intersection obey four-way stop rules. Bring your vehicle to a complete stop, look both ways and then proceed when it is safe to do so.
If two vehicles approach the intersection from different roadways at the same time, the driver on the left must yield to the vehicle on his or her right.
If a traffic light at an intersection is flashing yellow for one direction of travel and flashing red for the other direction of travel then the vehicles approaching the yellow flashing light have the right-of-way but must use caution. The vehicles approaching the red flashing light must come to a complete stop and then may proceed when it is safe to do so.
Sometimes police officers are posted at traffic lights to assist with traffic flow and prevent collisions. In these cases, follow the traffic direction of the officers.
By staying alert and following the rules of the road we are all working together keeping Ontario’s roads safe.
