Rodney SHARP – Impaired Driving, Drive While Disqualified

(SPRAGGE, ON) – On June 21, 2016, shortly after 5:30 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to traffic complaints on Highway 17, near Serpent River First Nation. A westbound vehicle almost caused head on collisions and was now in a ditch in the village of Spragge, Ontario.

At 6:14 p.m. police arrived on scene and observed a vehicle in the ditch. The driver of the vehicle was unresponsive and appeared to be passed out. Police observed an open bottle of liquor on the roof of the vehicle. The officer determined the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver was taken to a local hospital and later arrested.

Rodney SHARP, 64 years of age, from Serpent River First Nation, Ontario, was charged with:

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;

Driving While Disqualified, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code;

Driving While Ability Impaired – Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;

Operate Motor Vehicle Over 80 milligrams, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code; and

Fail or Refuse to Provide Breath Sample, contrary to section 254(3) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on June 27, 2016.
