(SUDBURY, ON)- On November 20, 2016, at approximately 12:38 p.m., members of the Sudbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on stationary patrol when a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner was observed travelling northbound on Highway 69 in Burwash Township.
Police followed the vehicle for a short distance, noting speed fluctuations and weaving from lane to lane. Officers initiated a traffic stop and the investigation revealed the driver had been consuming alcohol and was a disqualified driver.
Richard Maurice CHARRON, 46 years of age, from Sudbury, was arrested and charged with the following:
Driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle (alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
Driving while disqualified – court order, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code
The accused driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for 45 days under the Vehicle Impoundment Program (VIP).
The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on December 21, 2016 to answer to his charges.
The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol or drug consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
