Report Of Coyote Attack In Alliston

(TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH) – On Tuesday, January 30, 2017, at approximately 11:55 pm, Nottawasaga Detachment, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), received a report from a resident of the Town of New Tecumseth ( Alliston), that while walking his dog on Albert Street, in the east side of town, he encountered a pack of coyotes.

The resident stated there were approximately 8 coyotes in the pack and that 3 of the coyotes attacked both he and his dog. His dog was able to fend off the 3 coyotes who were involved in the attack and neither the complaint nor his dog was injured.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has informed us that this is coyote breeding season and a time when they are on the move and generally in packs during the hours of darkness. The MNR spokesperson also advised that coyotes are very good at taking advantage of whatever food people make available. It has been suggested that the coyotes are either being fed or they have found a food source in this area. Once the pups have grown enough, the female will take them out of the den and then they will wander as the food sources dictate. They will stay close to locations that they can find food.

The OPP would like to remind people to ensure their dog is leashed while being walked and to be vigilante of these roaming coyotes. Equally important is to remember to ensure that garbage containing food is not available to them.
