Regional Police members participate in annual Ride of Your Life Tour in support of Grand River Regional Cancer Centre

Waterloo Region, ON –A team of twelve Waterloo Regional Police Service members are in the final stages of preparing for an endurance-testing bicycle tour that starts in Waterloo Region and finishes four days later in the nation’s capital. The Ride of Your Life Tour is a 680 kilometre journey with the shared goals of raising funds for the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, while drawing attention and building community awareness for the Canadian
Police and Peace Officers Memorial.

The cyclists begin their trek on Wednesday September 25, 2013 at 8:15am in front of Grand River Hospital’s Regional Cancer Centre arriving in Ottawa on Saturday, September 28. The team will then make its way onto Parliament Hill by 2 pm where riders will be greeted by family and friends who have made the trip to support the Tour and the Memorial Service on Parliament Hill Sunday.

“Our Service is very proud to once again participate in the Ride of Your Life Tour in partnership with the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre,” said Chief Matt Torigian. “We commend the team members for helping improve quality of life for cancer patients and supporting their families, while also broadening community awareness of those police members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”
According to Ron Caudle, Chair of the Grand River Hospital Foundation Board of Governors, “This inspiring group of riders has raised over $100,000 in the last four years of this event. Their support of GRH cancer programs is very much appreciated.”

On the last Sunday of September each year, thousands gather at the memorial in Ottawa to commemorate officers from across Canada who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This event is attended by members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, and the participants in Ride of Your Life hope that their journey will inspire more participation and community recognition of this important gathering.
