Raksha Bandhan 2013

On Thursday, August 22, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., the London Police Service will celebrate the Hindu festival of “Raksha Bandhan”. The ceremony will take place in the Community Room, at London Police Headquarters, located at 601 Dundas Street, London ON.

The Raksha Bandhan ceremony involves the tying of a “Rakhi” (sacred thread) by a sister onto her brother’s wrist, and the brother in turn vows to protect her for life. The Rakhi can be worn for any length of time the person chooses to. In modern times, this tradition has expanded to tying a Rakhi to police officers who are sworn to protect the public from harm. The Rakhi signifies brotherhood, fraternity, love and care, which are consistent with the traditions and values of policing.

Members of the Hindu community in London will initiate this ceremony with Deputy Chief Brent Shea and other members of the London Police Service. This ceremony is a celebration of faith and culture and it emphasizes our desire to unite the community through an appreciation of diversity.

All members of the public are invited to attend.
