Police Vehicle Struck By Transport Truck – Officer Sent To Hospital

(ESSEX, ON) On August 26, 2016, around 10:00 a.m., Essex Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 401 near Howard Avenue in Windsor, Ontario.

A member of Windsor Police Service (WPS) was conducting a traffic stop when their police vehicle was struck, from behind, by the transport truck.

The officer was transported by EMS to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As a result, the male driver, Donald LAMPKIN, 53-years-old of Detroit, MI was charged with Fail to move into another lane for emergency vehicle – if safe to do so, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

“Making a traffic or emergency stop on the shoulder of a busy highway or road sets a dangerous stage for police officers and our road safety partners, due to the risk of being struck, injured or killed by approaching vehicles whose drivers are not paying full attention. We are counting on all drivers to help ensure the safety of everyone by slowing down and, on multi-lane highways, safely moving over.”

– Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair, Provincial Commander of Traffic Safety and Operational Support.
