Police Stress Importance Of Locking Your Vehicle

(ST.MARYS, ON) Provincial Constable McTaggart of the Perth County OPP St.Marys Detachment, expressed his concerns about the number of unlocked vehicles that had been entered in town overnight. On Tuesday morning November 16, 2010 five calls were received by the OPP, from St.Marys residents whose vehicles were rummaged through and had items stolen from inside.

In most instances the vehicles have been left unlocked on people’s driveways and small items are removed.
This morning the victims lost small change, sunglasses, cell phone chargers, two GPS units, a blue tooth device, CD’s and numerous other items.

Similar thefts have taken place in other Perth County communities and they usually take place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Last night four of the five thefts occurred in the neighbourhood south of the hospital and the other one was on Water St. North.

“This is a safe community, we just need to take away opportunities from those few individuals who take advantage of the trusting residents of St.Marys who forget to lock their vehicles”.

McTaggart hopes that residents heed this simple message, especially as the Christmas Season is approaching and Christmas purchased are left in vehicles. “Just put them out of sight and lock your doors”. “By all means don’t leave your wallet or purse on the seat for everyone to see and if possible put your electronic devises out of sight”.

St.Marys residents are urged to question those individuals who are trying to sell cheap GPS units or who suddenly have a lot of small change. If you observe suspicious people walking around your neighbourhood at night please call the OPP.

Anyone who has information about these thefts is requested to contact the Perth County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. You can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2220-TIPS.
