Pedestrian Charged For Crossing Against Don’t Walk Signal

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On February 2, 2016 at 9:58 a.m., members of the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to an injured pedestrian at the corner of Seguin Street and James Street in Parry Sound. During the investigation police determined that a pedestrian was crossing at the intersection against a “Don’t Walk” sign. A vehicle braked and stopped without hitting the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, Carrie ANDERSON, 37 years of age from Parry Sound was issued a Provincial Offences Notice for “Pedestrian disobey don’t walk signal”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind pedestrians to follow a few simple steps that will ensure you arrive at your destination safely.

Pedestrians:

· People operating wheelchairs and medical scooters are treated in the same way as pedestrians.

· At an intersection, before crossing, make sure traffic has come to a stop

· When possible, cross the road at a designated intersection or crosswalk

· At traffic lights, walk at the beginning of a green light. DO NOT start walking when the “do not cross” indicator appears

· Always maintain awareness of vehicles approaching from any direction. Be aware of vehicles entering the roadway from driveways or side roads

· Walk facing traffic where there are no sidewalks. DO NOT assume the vehicle coming at you sees you

· Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at dusk or at night.

Traffic safety is a shared responsibility and the OPP is reminding everyone that they can keep each other safe by following the traffic safety rules.
