(MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ON) – On July 23, 2016, at approximately 8:13 p.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Clarke Road, between Ilderton Road, and Ten Mile Road.
When police initiated the traffic stop, the vehicle, a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle (SUV), skidded to a stop. A passenger exited the vehicle, and ran into the driver’s seat.
As a result of the stop, it was determined that the initial driver was an unlicenced 18-year-old male, from London, Ontario. He had been “practising” driving with his parent, who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle at the time.
The parent, a 48-year-old licenced driver, from London, Ontario, has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with permit unlicenced person to drive motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) section 32(10), which carries a $200 set fine/$240 total payable fine.
Driving is a privilege – not a right.
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) publishes a driver’s handbook, which tells you what licence you need to drive in Ontario and how to get it, whether you are a new driver, a visitor, or a new resident in Ontario.
If you are applying for your first licence, there is a chapter which explains the graduated licensing system, how to apply for a licence, the tests you will have to pass and the driving privileges you will have at each licence level.
