(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment has received complaints from residents after an unknown individual attempted to rent a property on the internet that had already been sold.
On Monday, November 10, 2014 at approximately 2:11 p.m., police were contacted by a concerned member of the public after they responded to an ad on the internet for a house that was for rent.
Through investigation it was determined that the unsuspecting renter contacted an unknown male suspect through email who was attempting to rent a house located in Simcoe, Ontario. The male advised that they were currently in California and would not be in attendance to rent the home. The male made a request for funds to be sent through a money transfer at which time a lease agreement would be forwarded. The potential renter then contacted the actual owner who had informed them that they home had already been sold. No funds had been sent to the suspect and police are reminding the public to be extremely vigilant when responding to any ad on the internet.
No matter whether you are renting or buying, it is important that you protect yourself from frauds and scams. In general, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
