OPP WARN RESIDENTS OF DANGEROUS WATER CONDITIONS

(Hawkesbury, ON) – Due to changing weather conditions and continued thawing of lakes and rivers, there has been a change in both water levels and water flow of lakes and rivers in Prescott County.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising residents to be aware of open and fast moving water and to plan ahead as some routes are closed due to high water levels.
Rivers are moving fast with higher than normal levels combined with strong currents and glacial waters makes it a fatal threat. Be aware of debris floating on and below the surface of the water.

Residents should be aware of the dangers present at the edges of rivers and open water as the ground is unstable. Icy surfaces on bodies of water such as lakes, streams and rivers, should not be ventured on.

The OPP strongly urge adults to watch their children if they are near any body of water and to take the time to properly educate their children of the dangers of being around water.
