(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) 2014 Provincial Spring Traffic Enforcement Initiative occurred Easter Weekend from April 18 to April 21. Wellington County OPP and Cambridge OPP Highway Safety Division teamed-up on a targeted Car Seat and Seat Belt enforcement campaign on April 19. Police were set up on both west and eastbound on-ramps at Highway 6 (Hanlon) and the 401highway.
2400 cars were stopped resulting in 144 Car Seats being inspected. Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant John Mraud of Cambridge OPP reported that, “Every single Car Seat required some level of adjustment. Unfortunately, due to serious errors, 4 drivers received tickets in the amount of $240.00 and 2 demerit points for improperly securing their child.†In addition to the Car Seat enforcement, 10 occupants were stopped and ticketed for not wearing their seatbelts.
Wellington County OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Scott Lawson says, “We consistently saw improperly installed Car Seats as vehicles who were preparing to enter a busy, multi-lane highway.â€Â
The most common errors were five point harnesses were too loose; the chest clip was too low and the Car Seat itself was not adequately secured in the vehicle.
OPP remind the public to please review your Car Seat and vehicle manual for assistance when installing your Car Seat.
Lawson says Wellington County OPP is committed to hosting more educational Car Seat Workshops to increase the awareness for families and drivers alike who carry precious young passengers”.
Police remind the public that safety is only a click away.”
