OPP RESPONDS TO BEAR ENCOUNTER

(HALIBURTON, ON) – On Sunday August 24, 2014 at 10:30 pm officers from the Haliburton Highlands detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a bear incident on Wonderland Road in Haliburton – Municipality of Dysart et al, Ontario. In the early evening hours, a 30 year old male was at his residence and let his dog outside. The male then heard the dog yelping and observed it in an encounter with a black bear. The dog owner intervened in an attempt to rescue his dog at which point the bear turned on him. The male and his dog both received injuries during the incident. The bear left after the encounter. The male then drove himself to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. Police were contacted by hospital staff. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry was notified and initiated an investigation.
