OPP RESPOND TO WEAPONS RELATED CALL

(ALNWICK-HALDIMAND TOWNSHIP, ON) – On Monday November 11, 2013, shortly after midnight, officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a residence located on Ruttan Road in Alnwick-Haldimand Township with regards to a weapons related call for service.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers attempted to speak with a male who resided in the home, but he did not initially respond to their requests for him to exit the residence. Police also learned that the male was believed to be in possession of a firearm and as a result, additional OPP resources were called to the scene which included the Central Region Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit, the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) and trained Crisis Negotiators.

Shortly after 6:30AM, a male was taken into custody without incident and two children who were in the home were found unharmed and re-united with a family member who was on scene.

The investigation continued throughout the day and concluded with a search warrant being executed upon the residence later in the afternoon where a firearm and quantity of marihuana was located.

As a result of this investigation, a 42-year old male has been charged with the following offences:

Careless Use of a Firearm

Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Weapon

Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon

Careless Use of a Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition

Possession of a Schedule II Substance over 30 grams

Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Under 3 Kilograms.

The male, whose identity will not be released at this time as this could potentially identify the victims, was held in custody for a Bail Hearing that took place on Tuesday November 12, 2013 at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Cobourg.
