(PERTH COUNTY, ON) From Monday July 11, 2011 to Sunday July 17, 2011, Perth County OPP officers will be focusing on distracted drivers as they are participating in a province wide distracted driving campaign.
It is estimated that distraction is a factor in as many as eight out of ten collisions and distraction or inattention is cited as a contributing cause of 20% to 50% of fatal collisions. A recent survey reported that texting and driving has become the top road safety issue for Canadian drivers. This is the first year in over a decade that the top issue was not impaired driving.
Perth County OPP officers during their patrol hours will be concentrating on drivers who are using hand-held communication devices, have display screens visible to drivers, and that are using hand-held entertainment devices. Members of the Perth County OPP Traffic Unit will also be dedicating most of their time enforcing the distracted driving legislation during this period.
It is the Perth County OPP’s hope that very few offenders are found and that the motoring public will take this distracted driving safety initiative seriously by permanently putting a stop to this dangerous habit.
