OPP INVESTIGATE SUDDEN DEATH – QUETICO

(ATIKOKAN, ON) On Tuesday July 22, 2014 at approximately 8:30 am, officers of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the OPP Northwest Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) responded to an emergency call for service in Quetico Provincial Park. The officers attended with the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources helicopter. Officers were informed that a male was unresponsive after a tree had fallen on him.

Investigation revealed that a group of canoers were camping at Point Lake at the time of the incident. A storm passed through the area causing a large portion of a tree to fall, striking one of the males while he was sleeping in his tent. Lifesaving attempts were made by other members of the camping group but were unsuccessful. The male died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.

The deceased male has been identified as Charles Emerson SHOWALTER, age 63 years of Wheeling, WEST VIRGINIA, USA. The investigation was concluded with a post mortem being conducted at the Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora.
