(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Saturday June 11, 2011 at approximately 5:30 a.m. Perth County OPP officers were dispatched to Highway 23 at the Maitland River south of Listowel where a red sedan had driven into the watercourse and was situated on the North bank of the river.
Investigation indicated that the vehicle had left the highway at approximately 3:30 a.m., two hours prior to police attending the scene. The driver of the vehicle who had sustained minor injuries had returned home and called police to report the incident. The vehicle was heavily damaged as a result of the crash.
The 26 year old male driver from Harriston has been charged with careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) On Sunday June 12, 2011, shortly before 4 a.m. police were informed by parents that their daughter while driving her car through Newton had fallen asleep at the wheel. This resulted in her car striking a number of parked vehicles along Perth Line 72. The daughter had walked home and was not injured as a result of the crash.
As a result of this investigation a 21 year old female from Milverton has been charged with careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) On Sunday June 12, 2011 a resident of the Municipality of Perth South contacted the Perth County OPP advising that her 16 year old son had taken her car on Saturday and had been involved in a collision.
Investigation confirmed that the vehicle had struck a tree along Perth Road 141 West of St.Marys. The 16 year son was not injured as a result of this crash but he has been charged with careless driving, failing to remain at the scene of a collision and with being a class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by a qualified driver.
Three fail to remain collisions in one weekend is unusual and concerning to police. Not only is it an offence, but it also raises suspicions in every ones mind as to what drivers are trying to hide or avoid.
Motorists need to be aware of the requirements under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario they pertain to collisions.
Every person in charge of a motor vehicle who is directly or indirectly involved in an accident shall, if the accident results in personal injuries, damages highway property or damages other property apparently exceeding $1000, report the accident forthwith to the nearest police officer and furnish the information concerning the accident as is required.
Where an accident occurs on a highway, every person in charge of a vehicle that is directly or indirectly involved in the accident shall, remain at or immediately return to the scene of the accident, render all possible be assistance and upon request give in writing to anyone sustaining loss or injury or to any police officer or to any witness his or her name, address, drivers licence #, insurance information and the address of the registered owner of the vehicle and the vehicle permit number.
