OPP Distracted Driving Campaign

“Phone in one hand, Ticket in the other”

(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act became law on October 26, 2009. It prohibits the use of electronic devices while the vehicle is in motion with prescribed exceptions. A GPS navigation device, communication device with hands free system only, and vehicle information systems are allowed.

From February 13th – 19th, 2012, the South Bruce OPP will be utilizing all available personnel to participate in the OPP Distracted Driving Campaign. Motorists can expect an increased police presence across Southern Bruce County, looking for drivers that continue to drive while distracted. A distracted driver can be fined $155 at the roadside, but the cost can be far greater if the distracted driver causes a serious personal injury or fatal crash.

The South Bruce OPP wants motorists to recognize that distracted driving is a legitimate threat to roadway safety. Since distracted driving is a factor in 13% of all fatal crashes, it has been added to the Highway Safety enforcement priorities which include aggressive driving, impaired driving, speeding and seatbelt use.

“Driving while distracted is bad judgement and an unacceptable risk to public safety on the road. Drivers need to realize that when they’re driving, their focus has to be on the roadway, not an electronic device. If your cell phone rings while you’re driving, ignore it. Don’t let your next call be your last” – Inspector Bill Klym, Commander, South Bruce OPP.
