OPP BACK TO SCHOOL INITIATIVE RESULTS

(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) -Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) focused their attention from August 25th to September 5th, 2014 to educate the motoring public and students about being responsible on our roadways especially near school zones. The week before school and during the first full week students returned back to the classroom, uniform and plain clothes officers patrolled near schools to ensure the safety of children. Police were focusing on speeding, failing to stop at stop signs, failing to yield to pedestrians, and parking violations.

Officers dedicated over 123.5 hours of vehicle, foot and bicycle patrol during this two week initiative. A total of 55 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act along with 46 warnings and 7 municipal By-law infractions.

Wellington County OPP Detachment Inspector Scott Lawson says “Thank you”. “With the help of parents, students, busing companies and motorists alike our collective efforts in ensuring that the children of Wellington County arrived safely at school was accomplished. The goal now though, is not to let our guard down and become complacent. The safety of our children getting to and from school throughout the year is everyone’s responsibility”.
