OPP AT SCENE OF TRAIN DERAILMENT – CHEMICAL

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On October 18, 2013 at 1:13 pm, officers of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the report of a train derailment at the Resolute Forest Product mill property. No injuries have been reported.

Officers have confirmed that a single rail car containing hydrogen peroxide tipped over causing the chemical to leak. Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service has responded and is utilizing their resources to suppress any vapours and monitor the spill area.

OPP has set up a perimeter around the affected area of Central Avenue between Scott Street and Second Street in Fort Frances, ON. The public is asked to refrain from attending this perimeter until further advised.

The OPP is working with emergency responders and the Town of Fort Frances to monitor and assess the situation. The Ministry of the Environment has been notified. The rail company is Minnesota Dakota and Western Railway (MDW). MDW serves the paper mills in International Falls, Minnesota and Fort Frances, ON.
