(Elliot Lake, ON.) – On the morning of October 16, 2013 officers from the East Algoma OPP detachment in Elliot Lake received a call from a male advising that he was going to blow up the apartment building with him in it at 7 Dunn Road in Elliot Lake. Officers attempted to convince the male to exit the building but he refused. To ensure the public’s safety the building and area was secured and the tenants were evacuated. Police learned the male had barricaded himself in his apartment and he was now refusing to cooperate with police. The Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Canine Unit from the OPP were called in to assist. After numerous attempts to have the male surrender were unsuccessful an OPP Crisis Negotiator and Tactical and Rescue Unit (TRU) were also summoned to the scene along with the Mobile Support Unit (MSU) which supports all unit involved. All this was done in hopes of the incident coming to a peaceful resolution. Further attempts were made to speak with the male and police were able to re-establish communication but after lengthy negotiations he still refused to surrender. Members of the TRU team then entered the apartment and apprehended the individual without further incident. The tenants were then permitted to return to their apartments.
The OPP would like to thank the citizens of Elliot Lake for their assistance. While the incident was ongoing Dunn Road and a portion of Dieppe was closed to vehicular traffic. Although this may have posed as an inconvenience for many motorists and residents, it was necessary for the protection of everyone involved both police and civilian.
The incident is still under investigation by officers from the East Algoma OPP.
