Officer Rescues Bald Eagle

(MATTAWA, ON) – On November 27, 2016, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a member of the Mattawa Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call involving a bald eagle.

The eagle had suffered serious injuries and had been stuck in the Mattawa River, but had made it to shore. The Mattawa officer climbed down an embankment to rescue the bird. The officer was informed that he was to be cautious of the eagle’s talons when rescuing the bird, as they are quite strong and sharp. The officer draped his coat over the bird and carried it to his cruiser.

An expert bird handler that was doing a presentation in North Bay was contacted and arrangements were made to have the bird sent to Guelph Veterinary Clinic to be cared for.
