Officer Disarmed & Assaulted By Two Brothers

(Walpole Island- First Nations Territory, ON) – On July 4, 2015 at about 6:30 p.m. the Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were requested to assist the Walpole Island Police Service with regard to a wanted male and an assault upon a Walpole Island First Nation Constable (FNC).

A Walpole Island FNC had attempted to arrest a male who had been wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant. It was at this time the FNC became involved in an altercation with the wanted male and his brother. As a result of this altercation the FNC was physically assaulted by the two brothers resulting in the FNC suffering substantial injuries.

As a result of an extensive investigation, the Lambton OPP Criminal Investigations Unit has charged the two Walpole Island men with several criminal charges. The charged persons and applicable charges are as follows:

Charged/Charges: Edward A. SANDS, 27 years of age of Walpole Island, Ontario

– Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer

– Resist a Peace Officer

– Disarming a Peace Officer

– Assault with a Weapon

– Possession of a Controlled Substance

Charged/Charges: Walter C. SANDS, 20 years of age of Walpole Island, Ontario

– Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer

– Obstruct Peace Officer

– Choking

– Disarming a Peace Officer

The two men were held in custody and appeared before a Bail Court on July 6, 2015 at the Sarnia Court House. The FNC was taken to Hospital, treated for his injuries and later released.
