On April 9, 2016 just before 3 p.m members of Central Hastings OPP responded to a call for assistance after a young teenager fell into the frigid waters of the Moira River. The 13 year old male youth of Tweed, ON had been kayaking with his sibling near Bethel Road, in the Municipality of Tweed when he fell into the river. Fortunately the youth was wearing a life jacket and he was able to hold on to a tree branch while his brother called for help.
An officer with Central Hastings OPP who was first to arrive on scene, acted quickly by entering the water and rescuing the male. The Tweed Fire Department accessed a small vessel and assisted both the youth and officer back to shore from an island. The youth was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
Central Hastings OPP would like to remind residents to be aware of open and fast moving water. In spring water levels rise and become unstable due to excessive snowmelt runoff. Rivers are moving fast with strong currents and the water is very cold. Be aware of the dangers present around rivers and open water and be mindful of children who might be curious and venture too close to these dangerous areas. Many will be anxious to get out on the waterways on warmer days. Take the time to ensure all of the safety equipment is on board your boat before heading out and wear a life jacket or personal flotation device.
