(MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ON) – On July 8, 2015 the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report involving an internet camera.
A resident reported that on July 7, 2015, shortly after 9:00 p.m., they were rocking their child to sleep in their nursery when the internet camera used to monitor the room was remotely activated by unknown person(s).
The camera played eerie music and a voice could be heard indicating the parent and child were being watched.
The internet provider subsequently confirmed the home’s router had been hacked.
Middlesex County OPP reminds citizens that security cameras and monitoring systems may be susceptible to hackers.
Some have features which enable users to view their security camera from a remote location. An app or website is typically used to gain access to footage remotely. Cameras may have this option enabled by default, leaving the camera open to hackers.
To minimize risks, check the manual for details and/or contact the manufacturer, purchase from a trusted source, change the default password, be diligent with remote monitoring, and cover cameras when not in use.
