Numerous Drunk Drivers At RIDE

(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) – The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Festive R.I.D.E. campaign continued this weekend and resulted in several arrests for alcohol related Criminal Code Offences.

On November 28 2014 at approximately 8:10 p.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Management Unit (TMU) were conducting R.I.D.E. spot checks on Gore Road at Townline Road, Puslinch Township. Officers investigated the male driver of a 2008 Dodge Caravan. While speaking with the driver, police believed that he had consumed alcohol. A Roadside Screening Device test was administered which resulted in a fail.

Albino MELO, age 54 from Cambridge has been charged with Over 80 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on January 9, 2015 to answer to the charge.

On November 29, 2014 at approximately 1:47 a.m. police were investigating a traffic complaint. A male driver of a 2005 Honda Pilot was stopped and while speaking with the driver police suspected he was impaired by alcohol.

Dang NGUYEN, age 54 from Guelph has been charged with failing to provide a breath sample contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on December 19, 2014 to answer to the charge.

On November 29, 2014 at approximately 02:15 a.m. a 2002 Honda entered a R.I.D.E. program on Hwy 7, Guelph Eramosa Twp. Officers suspected the male driver was under the influence of alcohol. A Roadside Screening Device was administered which resulted in a fail.

Jamie ARDON age 31 of Waterloo was charged with Over 80 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court Jan. 13, 2015 to answer to the charge.

On November 29, 2014 at approximately 04:00 a.m. officers were just clearing a R.I.D.E program on Hwy 7, Guelph Eramosa Twp. when they stopped a male driver of a 2004 Ford Freestar. Officers determined the male had been drinking alcohol and arrested him for impaired driving.

Iqbal AMANZAI age 52 of Guelph, was charged with impaired driving and Over 80 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court Dec. 30, 2014 to answer to the charges.

On November 29, 2014 at approximately 11:00 p.m. officers were conducting a R.I.D.E program at Townline Rd. and Gore Rd., Puslinch Twp. A 2006 Volkswagen Golf entered the program and officers suspected the male party to be under the influence of alcohol. A Roadside Screening Device was administered which resulted in a fail.

Kevin SHEWCHUK age 32 of Cambridge was charged with Over 80 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is to appear in Guelph Criminal Court December 19, 2014 to answer to the charge.

On November 30, 2014 at approx. 8:00 p.m. officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. program on Wellington County Road 32 at Lake Road in Puslinch Twp. A White Chevrolet Express Van entered the R.I.D.E and upon speaking to the male driver officers suspected he had been drinking alcohol.

Michael DOWNER-SIMS age 26 of Cambridge was charged with Impaired Driving and Over 80 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court Dec. 23, 2014 to answer to the charges.

In each incident the involved vehicle was towed and impounded for a period of seven days and their drivers’ licences suspended for 90 days as per statute.

The Wellington County OPP Festive R.I.D.E. campaign will continue through December. Anyone who observes or suspects an impaired driver is asked to report it. The OPP is reminding drivers that any amount of alcohol can impair one’s ability to drive and the OPP can issue and immediate roadside driver’s licence suspension to drivers who register a blood alcohol content in the “Warn Range” of .05 to .08.
