NOTTAWASAGA OPP TEST NEW TOOL TO MONITOR SPEED

(NOTTAWASAGA, ON) Over the last couple of months, the Nottawasaga Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been working with the Town of New Tecumseth and the Police Services Board (PSB) in the development and use of new options to correct speeding habits. One of these options will be the use of an automated speed sign that will show driver’s their speed in areas where speed is a factor.

Detachment Commander Inspector Dirk Cockburn is looking forward to testing this new equipment to target speeding in Community Safety Zones as he states “Speeding is an aggressive driving behaviour, which is a major cause of motor vehicle collisions and can often lead to other aggressive driving behaviours.” “This will give driver’s one more tool in the toolbox to help reduce speed in areas where speed is a factor in our community”.

The ultimate goal for this test will be driver’s recognizing their speed and self-correcting to the point where they drive within the posted speed limit. Traffic safety is one of the OPP’s core functions and this opportunity to test some new equipment is a step forward in using technology to correct driving habits without the cost of a speeding ticket to the driver.
