Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers dealt with a variety of calls this past week, here are some examples:

Apr 13:

– A Brighton business reported a male known to have mental health issues walked in their front door leaving several hand written notes demanding that the person in charge read them. The writings were scattered thoughts with no clear message. Officers spoke to the man and strongly suggested he remain away from the business. (8:454am)

– Theft of $86 worth of gas reported by a Port Hope gas station on County Rd 2 11:45am. Vehicle described as a blue or green Chev minivan early 2000’s. Investigation is ongoing

– Found drivers licence and vehicle registration turned in to police who returned it to the owner

– Elderly dementia sufferer called 911 in an attempt to contact her daughter. Officers ensured the caller was safe and there was no emergency. Resident to be placed in a care facility the end of this week according to family members.

– Report of a pickup truck towing a trailer with no lights, its doors flapping open and debris flying out on Hwy 401 eastbound Port Hope area (10:15pm). Officers located the truck and determined the driver to be disqualified from driving. The 30 yr old Belleville man was charged accordingly.

Apr 14:

– A white Ford pickup truck failed to stop for an officer at 2am north of Campbellford. The truck was last seen travelling through a wooded area near the 12 Line West and County Rd 30. The investigation is ongoing.

– Police were called to Kent St Campbellford for a raccoon in the area of the public school. Officers trapped the animal in a live cage provided by a nearby resident and re-located it outside of town. (7:40am)

– Customer at a Brighton grocery store reported the theft of a laptop, books and prescription glasses from her car while in the store yesterday (Apr 13).

– Police responded to a report of a disabled school bus with children on Hwy 401 Brighton (4:30pm). The driver managed to re-start the engine when officers arrived.

– An angry parent contacted police to report that a scruffy man was allowed by a teacher to use the washroom at his son’s school in Port Hope. Officers advised him to speak to school officials.

– An officer stopped a car for speeding on Cty Rd 28 Port Hope and detected an odour of marihuana use. After investigation the rear occupant, a 24 yr old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule II substance: cannabis marihuana under 30g. He was released at the scene.

Apr 15:

– Resident on Cty Rd 45 in Hamilton Twp reported her purse stolen from her unlocked car overnight. She lost all her identification, credit cards and passport.

– Two calls to a Port Hope home by a resident known to have mental health issues. One reporting persons under her bed (9:57am) and the other reporting a suspicious truck (10:37am). Schizophrenic Society to be consulted for assistance.

– A neighbour dispute in Colborne resulted in a 75 yr old man being charged with criminal harassment, mischief and unlawfully being in a dwelling. He was released with certain conditions until his court date.

– A Campbellford parent contacted police to report her son had been threatened by another student with a knife on their way home from school. Investigation ongoing.

– Police responded to two separate calls in Campbellford requesting assistance from ex-partners collecting belongings from their former homes (5:45pm & 6pm). Officers stood by to keep the peace suggesting to everyone to contact a lawyer to assist them in dividing their property.

Apr 16:

– Police were called to a Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home in response to a report of a step-son stabbing his 79 yr old step-father (7:40am). Officers located the step-son sitting in a car outside of the home holding a bible and the knife which he surrendered to police. Officers located the uninjured step-father who advised that the knife was pressed into his stomach but did not break skin. The 60 yr old step-son was arrested and faces a charge of assault with a weapon. He was held for a bail hearing with a recommendation for a psychiatric assessment. Names withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

– Report of a 21 yr old autistic grandson assaulting his 80 yr old grandmother at a Brighton home. After speaking to family members, the grandson was taken to a nearby hospital for a mental health assessment.

– Report of an intoxicated man on Front St W Hastings who had removed his clothing. Officers arrested the 60 yr old male who was eventually taken to an area hospital due to his level of intoxication. (3:40pm)

– A 91 yr old Brighton resident accidentally dialed 911 when attempting to call a neighbour. Officers confirmed with the caller there was no emergency.

– Report of two males arguing in the Brighton library. Officers ensured that both men left the premises and went their separate ways. No charges resulted.

Apr 17: (to noon)

– 911 dialed from a Colborne Industrial Park business. Employee advised that she was trying to get an outside line. No emergency. (8:30am)

– Police responded to a report of a suicidal male at a Hamilton Twp home who had posted pictures of a noose on social media indicating a desire to self-harm. Officers located the uninjured male who had consumed a quantity of medications and alcohol. He was apprehended by police and taken to a nearby hospital for a mental health assessment.

– A Port Hope resident reported selling a car with the licence plates still attached about 30 yrs ago. She is now receiving parking ticket notices originating in Hamilton. She was advised to attend MTO and remove herself as the registered owner.

Northumberland OPP officers also conducted six RIDE programs, investigated 11 motor vehicle collisions and 44 traffic related complaints.
