(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers dealt with a variety of call this past week, here are some examples:
Apr 20:
– 911 call on an old party line still active in Seymour Twp. No emergency, possibly weather related (rain)
– Fraudulent email reportedly from ‘Revenue Canada’ stating that a refund was available to the recipient after personal information was provided. No money lost however caller did give SIN # before he became suspicious (Campbellford)
– A visiting student at ENSS dialed 911 from a pay phone. Officers located the younger student and cautioned him for ‘playing’ with the phone.
– Officers gave advice to the family of a 90 yr old man who recently removed another family member as power of attorney. (Campbellford)
– A Hamilton Twp senior reported the theft of $1,500 from his bank account after his bank card was stolen. Investigation is ongoing.
– An 83 yr old Havelock woman was charged at a Campbellford grocery store in relation to ‘price switching’
– A 2014 Toyota was stopped for speeding westbound Hwy 401 Colborne area. The 23 yr old Scarborough driver was charged with travelling 148 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. A rear passenger from Quebec was charged with having open liquor. (11:20pm)
Apr 21:
– 3 car collision on County Rd 2 at Lawson Settlement Rd Brighton ((9:10am). Roadway closed 1 ½ hrs for investigation. A 30 yr old Brighton woman was charged with Careless Driving in this rear-ender type collision. Minor injuries.
– Report of a ‘home less’ man panhandling in Brighton. He was not located.
– A Trent Hills resident reported his email account being ‘hacked’. The fraudsters then emailed his accountant and requested funds for a home purchase overseas. The accountant became suspicious and contacted his clients who confirmed they hadn’t sent the email. No money was lost.
– A Port Hope resident on Trew Rd reported several mailboxes smashed
– A Chev Malibu was stopped on King St Colborne 8pm for an expired validation sticker. The driver/owner, aged 27 from Quinte West was found to have no insurance. He was charged accordingly
– Report of a male sleeping in the Hastings Post Office lobby. He was not located by officers. Several calls related to this male over the past few weeks who is known to police.
Apr 22:
– Hwy 401 eastbound BMW was stopped for speeding (143 km/h) Brighton area. The 23 yr old Kingston man was also charged with operating a radar detector (12:05am)
– A Kingston area woman reported leaving her purse on a chair at the Port Hope En Route 11pm. When she returned it was gone. Police were contacted hours later by the owner who advised that unknown person had returned the purse to her at her home with nothing missing
– Report of a stolen ATV from a home on Guertin Rd Brighton between Apr 16-17. 2004 Artic Cat green with Ont. Lic. #28WA0
– Two chainsaws reported stolen from a shed at a residence on Old Danforth Rd Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. (a Jonsered 2165 & a Echo CS370). Investigation ongoing
– A resident on Newton Rd Alnwick-Haldimand Twp reported a possible rabid raccoon in her backyard. Officers attended and determined that the animal was a danger to the public and destroyed it.
– A male reportedly sleeping in the Brighton Post Office was located by police and provided housing for the night in a nearby motel.
– Police received a report of a prowler near a home on Valley View Ln Percy Twp. Officers checked the area and were unable to locate anyone. (11:15pm)
Apr 23:
– Officers spoke to a separated couple arguing over one of them returning their children from a visit with muddy shoes. No charges resulted
– A support worker for an 83 yr old Campbellford resident contacted police when she was struck with an umbrella by her client. The elderly dementia sufferer was taken by officers to an area hospital for an assessment. No charges resulted.
– A Port Hope resident with known mental health issues and several unsubstantiated complaints to police called 911 to report that she thought she had locked her front door when she went to bed and it was now unlocked. The detachment mental health liaison officer enacted a safety plan involving (but not limited to) alternate phone numbers to contact for support including daily visits from a health care professional to ensure medication compliance
– Intoxicated male reportedly attempted to buy a pellet gun at a Hastings auction hall causing a scene when he was refused. No charges resulted, male to be issued a trespass notice for that property/business
Apr 24: (to noon)
– Report of an ex-husband harassing the caller in Alderville First Nations. Officers attended and spoke to the female (12:45am). Investigation ongoing
– Police investigated a ‘road rage’ incident at 4am on Hwy 401 eastbound Port Hope area involving two tractor trailers, one not letting the other pass. Officers spoke to both drivers who were cautioned for their part in the erratic driving.
– A driver reported sliding off County Rd 30 into the ditch near Loomis Rd due to icy road conditions (6am). Flat tire only, no injuries
– Theft of a brand new patio set reported from an open garage at a Earle Rd residence in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. Occurred sometime this morning. Investigation ongoing.
Northumberland OPP officers also conducted four RIDE programs, investigated 11 motor vehicle collisions and 27 traffic related complaints.
