Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past week, here are some examples:

Feb 27:

An elderly Hamilton Twp resident reported receiving a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a ‘Readers Digest’ agent. The caller advised her that she had won $250,000 and that they would require $9,000 to ‘cover the taxes’ prior to sending her the winnings. The resident completed an e-transfer from her bank account to an account in the Philippines and has since learned that she had been defrauded. Investigation ongoing.

Several children were spoken to by police after a report was received of youths throwing rocks at passing trains in the area of Maplewood Ave in Brighton. No charges resulted.

Police attended a Cramahe Twp home in response to a 9-1-1 call determined to be caused by a toddler playing with the phone.

Feb 28:

The Colborne public library reported the theft of their petty cash sometime on Saturday February 25th. Investigation ongoing.

A green Honda Accord was stopped by police on Main St in Brighton at 1:29pm resulting in a local man registering within the Warn range on a roadside test. This was the driver’s second such reading (between 50-80mg of alcohol) within the past five years resulting in a seven day driver’s licence suspension.()

Two Toronto area fishermen were advised to get off the unsafe/thin ice of Rice Lake where two hours earlier two other fishermen were rescued after falling through the ice. Both men complied with the officer’s request.

Mar 1:

Police responded to a vehicle rollover on County Rd 35 in Percy Twp at 7:11pm. The uninjured lone occupant was found to have been drinking and lost control of his pickup truck while passing another vehicle. The 33 yr old Campbellford man was charged with Careless Driving and issued a three day licence suspension for having between 50-80mg of alcohol in his system. ()

After receiving a report of a man breaching conditions of a prior release (not adhering to a curfew, consuming alcohol and possessing a cell phone), police attended a Brighton home and arrested the 34 yr old man resulting in three charges of Failing to Comply with Recognizance. He was held for a bail hearing.

Officers provided advice to a Port Hope mother and son who were arguing over having each other’s property. No further police involvement was warranted.

Mar 2:

Police responded to a report of an unruly passenger on a coach bus travelling westbound on Hwy 401 in the Brighton area at 11:00am. A 29 yr old Toronto area woman was removed from the bus and transported by officers to a nearby business to await the arrival of family members. No charges resulted.

Police attended a Cramahe Twp residence after receiving information that a male was breaching his release conditions by being in the area. Officers located the 41 yr old Ajax man and arrested him for Breach of Recognizance. He was taken to the Brighton detachment and subsequently released with an impending court date in April. Names withheld.

Police responded to a family dispute at a Hamilton Twp home where officers found two intoxicated and combative family members who bit and punched each other. One family member was arrested for breaching the peace, taken to the Cobourg detachment and held until sober. No charges resulted.
