Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week, here are some examples:

Nov 14:

– At 12noon officers patrolling on ATVs in Northumberland Forest Alnwick-Haldimand Twp observed a truck enter with a couch and exit a short time later without it. After speaking to the four occupants, officers determined that the couch had been dumped and set on fire. Four youths from the Cobourg area were charged under the Public Lands Act and each face a fine of $240.

– At 1:04pm police received complaints of a Black Mercedes travelling at a very high rate of speed on Hwy 401 westbound into the Cobourg area where construction is ongoing. Officers measured the car travelling 206 km/h west of County Rd 45 stopping it as it was exiting at County Rd 28, Port Hope. A 19 yr old Ottawa, Ontario man was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed. His licence was suspended for 7 days and the car was impounded for the same period of time. Several motorists exiting the highway slowed down and thanked the officers for stopping the car and taking enforcement action against the driver.

– At 1:26pm a white Honda was measured to be travelling 154 km/h on Hwy 401 eastbound in the Port Hope area. The 29 yr old Etobicoke, Ontario driver was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed. His licence was suspended for 7 days and the car was impounded for the same period of time.

Nov 15:

– A Port Hope resident on 7th Line reported several military vehicles travelling on the road. Police confirmed that the Armed Forces were conducting manoeuvres.

– Theft of six felled trees reported stolen from a property on Eagleson 1st Line in Port Hope sometime over the past week

– Officers located a missing 32 yr old Windsor man (near Boyce’s Bridge in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp) sitting in his vehicle along Hwy 401 threatening self-harm. He was apprehended and taken to a hospital for treatment with his mental health issues.

Nov 16:

– Police received a complaint of a possible impaired customer leaving a Trenton area business. Officers located the brown Montana van travelling westbound on Hwy 401 in the Grafton area. A roadside test was conducted on the driver which registered a ‘fail’. He was arrested and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Jared MCFAYDEN age 33 of Brampton, Ontario was charged with Operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on December 2, 2015

– Police are investigating the dumping of garbage bags on Thompson Rd in Trent Hills, one containing the remains of a medium sized dog. Investigation ongoing.

– A Brighton resident contacted police after her car alarm was activated. Officers checked the area and no suspicious persons were found. The car was not damaged.

Nov 17:

– Several mailboxes damaged on County Rd 2 in the Wicklow Beach area overnight. Investigation ongoing

– Police responded to a family dispute in Port Hope involving a father and his adult son arguing over the care of a horse, or lack thereof. The son left for the evening to keep the peace.

– Police attended a Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home in response to a domestic dispute. There were no charges and one partner left for the evening.

Nov 18:

– Report of several mailboxes damaged in the areas of Gully Rd Alnwick-Haldimand Twp and Grimshaw Rd Hamilton Twp sometime overnight

– A senior advised police that he picked up a hitchhiker on County Rd 2 near Boes Rd on Monday and dropped him off in downtown Brighton. He later realized that his wallet was stolen from his jacket which was in the backseat with the male. The suspect is described as being a Caucasian male in his 30’s, 5 10”, brown hair with an unkempt appearance.

– At 6:30pm police received a report of an erratic driver on Hwy 401 westbound in the Grafton area. Witnesses reported that the car was being driven at inconsistent speeds and almost struck the centre median twice. Officers located the car pulled over on the shoulder of the highway near the Burnham St exit and arrested the driver after determining that he was impaired. The male was taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests which resulted in Alexander TSYGANKOV age 45 of Toronto, Ontario being charged with Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs or alcohol, Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, and having open liquor in the motor vehicle. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on January 13, 2016.

Northumberland OPP also conducted three RIDE programs, investigated 18 motor vehicle collisions and 45 traffic related complaints.
